Mirian reads to her younger siblings

Dear Russell,

Mirian is 12 years old and in the 5th grade at a school in the highlands of Guatemala. After helping her mother with chores around the house, she loves to spend time reading new books. She is so grateful for the book you donated, Russell, and will read to her siblings who still do not know how to read. In this image, you can see her with the book ‘Puss in Boots.’

Our mobile library, the Biblioteco (Biblioteca + tecolote, or owl), provides library services to villages that do not have access to books. Our aim at PAVA is to promote the love of discovery through reading. At present, we are working in three communities and plan to open two more this year.

To enhance the work of the Biblioteco, we encourage communities to set up a communal library (as in the case of this village). First, they designate a physical space where it will operate, and second, they organize a Library Committee to operate it. The Library Committees are comprised of volunteers who are trained in how to manage the library.
