Yoni has his first experience with a book

Yoni-2-1024x768
Dear Adam and Jeffrey,

This is Yoni´s first visit to the small community library.  He has no books at home and this is his first experience with a book. He chose a book on mice and painting and wants to learn how to draw. Thanks to your kind donation he will be able to take this book home and enjoy the experience.

The PAVA mobile library, the Biblioteco (Biblioteca + tecolote, or owl), provides library services to villages that do not have access to books. Our aim at PAVA is to promote the love of discovery through reading. At present, we are working in three communities in the highlands of Guatemala and plan to open two more this year.

To enhance the work of the Biblioteco, we encourage communities to set up a communal library (as in the case of this village). First, they designate a physical space where it will operate, and second, they organize a Library Committee to operate it. The Library Committees are comprised of volunteers who are trained in how to manage the library.

Thank you, Jeffrey and Adam, for your generosity!

New desks in Panimachavac!

Pupitres
Dear Haris, Lesley, Erik, Adam, Pradeep, Bill and Colleen, Kandace, Jeffrey, and James,

Thank you for coming together to provide 25 new desks to a classroom in Panimachavac, a village in the Chimaltenango region of Guatemala. The school year started in January and the children were sitting in very old broken desks. What a surprise it was to come into the classroom and find these comfortable new desks!

25 children will have a much better school experience thanks to your generous donation. What’s more, the extra money will be used to provide better seating for their library. Thank you for supporting PAVA helping to facilitate the process of integral development of rural communities in Guatemala by responding to their needs.

Reading to children is an art

Rosmery Ajtzac 2
Dear Dieter and Dave,

Rosmery, 17 years old, is a reading promoter in the small community library in Paxixil, Guatemala. She has a primary school degree and has not been able to further her education because of economic reasons. She received training in reading to children and currently hosts several story telling time groups. When she reads a book to children, she then uses her imagination to create her own story from the same pictures. She is borrowing this book you donated, Dieter and Dave, so she can prepare for her next group. She sometimes even tells the stories in Kachiquel, which is her native language.
